Only 10 years separate the two works: Martucci, the master, took up and completed in 1892 with a revision the Quintetto op. 45 composed in 1877, Respighi, the pupil, composed his Quintetto in 1902. In both we find an ideal continuity full of pathos, an atmosphere that immediately takes us back to the late Romantic tradition of the German school. Not to be missed are these two fascinating examples of the little-known Italian instrumental music that looks to the great transalpine masters such as Schumann and Brahms.
