There is something 'classical' (or perhaps already 'neoclassical') in Gabriel Fauré's approach to chamber music. A genuine love for symmetries (compare the Sonatas for violin and piano op. 13, the Sonatas for cello and piano op. 119, the Quintets with piano op. 89), the adherence to the organics and forms of an Austro-German chamber music tradition. Fauré, as it is easy to see, favours the genres with strings and piano, while as far as form is concerned, the impression is that it is more a matter of conventional and outward respect than actual and substantial.
