In these two CDs, Marco Rizzi has made sense of all that is contained in Johann Sebastian Bach's six Sonatas and Partite for solo violin, which, alongside the six Suites for solo cello, are one of the highest monuments of polyphonic music for stringed instruments. The enormous technical difficulties that these pages present to the performer are never an end in themselves: we cannot speak only of instrumental virtuosity, it is not a pure display of technical skill, but the logical and natural result of Bach's complex polyphonic musical idea.
